What is Yoga Nidra?

The literal meaning of Yoga Nidra can be interpreted as 'Yogic Sleep', but it is in fact an awakening!

With stories of a twenty minute session of Yoga Nidra being the equivalent of four hours sleep (which is not true), Yoga Nidra is a beautiful state of 'being'. You do not 'do' Yoga Nidra because the practice is effortless, it is simply a state of being, not doing. We are, afterall, human 'beings'!

Yoga Nidra is a meditative practice, but not in the sit crossed legged and ‘empty your mind’ stereotypical western version of ‘meditation’. It is also not a ‘how far can I bend in my Sweaty Betty clothing’ yoga session.

Yoga Nidra is an effortless state of (generally) horizontal restfulness, the stage between being awake and being asleep, yet you are conscious and aware. It is a deeply restorative and restful state of being which you do not need to ‘do’ anything to experience as nothing needs to be done.

It is a timeless, liminal, paradoxical space. It is a practice which we can all access and we have all experienced it and is intrinsic part of us all. The benefits are far reaching due to it being an adaptogenic meditative practice with the capacity to ‘heal, nourish and liberate’.

Yoga Nidra is typically spoken word guided ‘mediation’. The length of a Nidra session varies but generally the sessions last for around 15-30 minutes.  You lie down in a comfortable position – no effort, no pressure, not need to ‘empty your mind’. You will then be gently guided safely through the cycle of Yoga Nidra. You will stay fully conscious and aware throughout.

We can work with Yoga Nidra in different ways, all can be discussed with you. We can solely do a 30 minute session. We could do a session and follow it smoothly into a Sound Bath or Reiki.

Another option which we could explore is setting up a set of four Yoga Nidra sessions; this would be a co-created Yoga Nidra where we work with any issues you may be experiencing.

Personally, I find Yoga Nidra can help immensly with insomnia, this is in fact where I started with this practice. Being an adaptogenic practice, the uses are almost endless! I can also provide recordings of the Nidra to listen to in your own time.

This is an incredible practice which I owe much too and would love to introduce to you!

'Welcome home to your rested self'.
