What is Yoga Nidra?

The literal meaning of Yoga Nidra can be interpreted as 'Yogic Sleep'. It is a beautiful state of 'being'. You do not 'do' Yoga Nidra because the practice is effortless, it is simply a state of being, not doing. We are, after all, human 'beings'!

Yoga Nidra is a meditative practice, but not in the sit crossed legged and ‘empty your mind’ stereotypical western version of ‘meditation’. It is also not a movement yoga session.

Yoga Nidra in simple terms is a spoken word guided ‘mediation’. However, it goes deeper than a simple meditation, running through a cycle which take you into restfulness and back out again.

It takes you into the beautiful state of rest, something which seems to be difficult in today's world!

The length of a Nidra session varies but with the addition of the Sound Journey throughout, the actual experience lasts for around 40 minutes. This allows time on either side to settle into the practice and then emerge gently out of the practice.

Generally, you lie down in a comfortable position – no effort, no pressure, not need to ‘empty your mind’.

You will then be gently guided safely through the cycle of Yoga Nidra through spoken word,

with the addition of gentle sound throughout.

For the Yoga Nidra and Sound Journey sessions, I use crystal singing bowls, himalayan bowls and a couple of other instruments. Sound healing has been used for thousands of years as a way to holistically help heal the body, spirit and mind.

You will stay fully conscious and aware throughout.

Although some people (including me when I practice) sometimes have a little doze!

Yoga Nidra is an effortless state of horizontal restfulness, the stage between being awake and being asleep,

yet you are conscious and aware. It is a deeply restorative and restful state of being which you do not need to ‘do’ anything to experience as nothing needs to be done.

It is a timeless, liminal, paradoxical space. It is a practice which we can all access, we have all experienced it and is intrinsic part of us all. The benefits are far reaching due to it being an adaptogenic meditative practice with the capacity to heal, nourish and liberate.

Personally, I find Yoga Nidra can help immensely with insomnia, this is in fact where I started with this practice.
